Returning from our visa run to the HODR crib we felt exhausted despite the break, physically and mentally. The first day back to work seemed to drag and I spent the day wondering what the rest of Sumatra had to offer; the travel bug had returned. It felt like it was time to move on and see more of the area before we were due to leave for Australia.
We left the house on the day we made the decision, it was all very sudden which was good as I hate long goodbyes. On the last day I made a few visits to say farewell to some of the locals I’d made friends with, it was emotional.
HODR’s Sungai Geringging project was my first volunteer experience. I was sceptical before arriving but it has been one of the best experiences I’ve had. I’ve realised how much I enjoy working outside and working with people. I made some great friends, some I’ve already plans to meet again. I also got chance to help people who needed help. Without a doubt I will be more involved with volunteering in the future.
Hopefully the people of Sumatra affected by the earthquake will be back on their feet soon, and sooner with the help of the likes of HODR.
Farewell Sungai Geringging and the HODR volunteers.
…and don’t pee in the shower
