Sea-to-Sky Highway

06/05/2009

On Monday I needed another hire car to pick up the very last bits for the apartment and to do a food shop at Save on Foods. I was passing Budget Car hire on Dunsmuir in the afternoon so I popped in. Again I had the high standard of ‘Budget’ service from the staff.  I asked for the cheapest car they had, turned out to be a Yaris. Cringe, a crappy small girl car (no offense).  The Budget worker asked if I was sure I wanted it, jokingly I said nah I’d prefer the Sweeet Mustang you’ve got sitting out there.  ”Well it’s only $30 more for the day and it’s brand new; 175km on the clock if you want?” he said.  I was reeled in like a fish.  What red blooded male can say no to an engine that purrrs like that??  ”Hell yeah, let’s do it!” I asked where I could tear up some road, since I’d have the car for 24 hours.   “Sea to Sky Highway to Whistler would be perfect.”  Done! I finished the pick-up jobs Monday night, and early Tuesday morning the girlfriend and I set out on the Sea-to-Sky highway.   Oh-my-word!  I couldn’t work out which blew me away more, the car or the scenery… nope it was the car.   It was immense!

For the LADS: Ford Mustang GT; 4.6L, 300BHP, 0-60 5.2s, Top speed 150mph

The most powerful car I had driven previous was the old ladies beamer; 2.0l. (I drove it down to Glastonbury with Gadget Gav) great with the girls but it’s power capabilites didn’t quite match the Mustang.  It took a bit of getting used to being RWD but I got the hang of it soon enough, the car was an absolute beast!

The scenery along the way was amazing, mountains, forest and ocean everywhere. Arriving in Whistler I was slightly disappointed.  Being an avid skier I have always wanted to visit Whistler. Not to visit but to Ski it, I couldn’t ski it as there was no snow.   But I guess Winter will be back soon enough. The town was a lot bigger than I imagined and had more of a town atmosphere compared to the ‘European ski resort’ feel I was used to but over all I liked the place.  Everything seemed geared up for the Olympics, plenty of nicely finished shops/restaurants, and scores of large wooden apartment buildings still being constructed. See you in November Whistler… minus the Mustang, plus the skis.

I object to the comment ‘old lady’ – and that after you STOLE my Beamer to visit an imaginary ‘friend’ in Somerset – so gullible I bought that! Glad you enjoyed the drive – hope you didnt take up to full speed!

I object to the comment ‘Gadget Gav’ … Just kidding, you know I secretly like that name.

4.6 litres… I would have peed.
