Australia – Gold Coast

22/12/2009

My second trip to Australia!  In 2007 I had a 3 week holiday with ex girlfriend Maria and family.  A great holiday, we traveled to Brisbane with a trip to Fraser Island and then spent time in Sydney.  My overview was that the places I saw were very similar to England, especially the architecture – but obviously the place had better weather.  I found the majority of Australians were pretty brash and often rude – they  didn’t seem to be too fond of tourists.

I was sceptical of how Australia was going to be.

Will and I flew into the Gold Coast from Bali via Kuala Lumpur on December 20th.  As usual I got stopped in customs and had a customs officer search through my bags and check the hard drive on my laptop (a new one).  After it was apparent I wasn’t a terrorist and had no child porn in my possession they let me in.  Welcome to Australia.  Not a complete waste of my time as the officer gave me some sound advice and told me a place we could stay for the night which was a 3min walk form the airport.  We spent the first night at the Coolangatta YHA Backpackers just next to the airport.  $28AUD, breakfast included - www.coolangattayha.com

The following morning we took the ‘easy bus’ to Byron Bay where we were due to meet Malaysian travel buddies and friends from home Harriet and Katya and HODR volunteer Toby.

Let the fun down under begin!
